2011 Skills Day

The Skills Challenge day, held Sunday, Sept. 25, has been described by many club
members as one of the
most ‘fun days ever’ at TEMAC. There were no prizes nor awards, as the intention
was simply to
have as many people, of all skill levels, participate in events geared towards
having fun. Challenges
included spot landings, touch-n-go’s, follow the leader, and the such. Response
and feedback
were almost universally positive, and members insist on another such event next
year.
2011 Jets Day

TEMAC members had a ‘blast’ at their first electric ducted fan jet model event
on Sunday,
September 4, mirroring the warbirds event but exclusively for jets. The weather
was cooler and
slightly windy, but perfectly suitable for the faster flying models. A few
non-member visitors participated
in the fun as well. More than 25 models were flown, covering a range of sport
and scale aircraft,
some hand-launched, some bungee-cord launched and some taking off with
retractable landing gear.
One of the slowest models flown was a huge FlyFly F-86 Sabre, and the fastest
was the
Habu 32 by E-Flite. No prizes or awards were given out; this was simply an
excerise in fun.
2011 Funfly

Nearly 50 registered electric RC pilots gathered at the TEMAC field in
Stouffville
(just north of Toronto) for their 8th annual electric funfly, a 2-day event with
lots of casual flying and
competition. TEMAC was the birth-place of the popular Formosa racing events, and
it goes without saying that
several races were held. Casual fun-flying saw everything from ultra micro
models to big 1/4 scale
models, ducted fan jets and helicopters. There were several prizes, courtesy of
AJ Hobbies and Pinnacle Hobby,
awards for models in several categories, as well as a live auction to raise
funds to support the club.

Wow! Finally some great weather and a great turnout at TEMAC. There were
about a dozen cars worth of pilots and
lots of flying
from late afternoon until dusk. Our new tables were well used and
appreciated.
Here are some new photos, most from Simon Hinchcliff.

A few of us went up past Port Perry to Jack Higgins' son's house, to finish
construction of 6 new tables
for the TEMAC field. These are terrific tables, made of treated wood and
concrete-type tops, covered with
outdoor carpeting. It took a couple hours to finish these,
and then we had a delicious barbeque.
A couple hours were also devoted to transporting the tables to the field. We
offer a sincere thanks to
Jack for designing and preparing these tables, and to his son Carl, who did a
tremendous amount of hard work,
and devoted a lot of time, his truck and gasoline to help us out. He even did
the barbeque cooking for us!
Helping out were: Jack and Carl Higgins, Greg Hazelton, Simon Hinchcliff,
Christopher and Tyler Shim, and myself.

From Greg Cadez:
Here are some pictures that I would like to share from last night. It was
getting a bit dark before we could get the
DR1 up in the air. Thanks to Simon (new member) for taking the time to take
some pictures of this plane.
It is really amazing to see this thing in the air... It looks fantastic! Now if
someone had a Sopwith Camel or SE5A ....

May 12, 2011
Despite some strong east winds, 10 TEMAC members showed up for our official
first day of flight training.
Actually, only one student had training; everyone else just flew for fun.
At 5pm, winds were from the south-east, at over 20 kph. Although challenging,
flights started right away.
Highlights of the evening were:
Jack Higgins' Multiplex Mentor, converted to a twin, had its
maiden and second flight.
Stanley flew a couple aerobatic planes through some impressive maneuvers,
including rolling circles, knife edge circles,
knife edge loops, knife edge loops staring down into the wind, spins, slides,
and more.
Greg Hazelton flew his .60-size Focke Wolf,
and an impromptu Formosa race resulted in our first ever racing mid-air
collision, when Issac Murray's plane
cut its propeller into Greg Hazelton's models' wing, leaving a big gash and
hole, yet surprisingly, both models kept flying nicely!
Lo't's of fun!

May 9, 2011
The field has been rolled; it's pretty flat.
I was able to takeoff and land easily with my 6.5 pound jet on 2" wheels.
It's the center section of the field that's been improved, about 50 feet east of
the fence; it's easily noticeable just
by looking at it. Grass cutting starts this week (I don't know what day yet).
If people are careful, you can drive in to the parking area, but if you notice a
wet area (especially at the end
of the gravel driveway), try to drive around it.
Flight instruction is slated to start this Wednesday at about 5 or 6 pm,
depending on which instructors turn up.
I'll try to be there by 5pm.
Please note ... all flyers must have MAAC membership.
Flight privileges will not be given to non-MAAC members; NO EXCEPTIONS.

May 6, 2011
Flying season is here, but the weather has not been so great. It's been cold
and windy for the most part.
Our parking area is wet and muddy; do not park there. I know it's an
inconvenience, but stay parked on
the gravel driveway until further notice.
Arrangements have been made for rolling (flattening) the field, and for grass
cutting.
Nothing can be done until the ground is dryer, but expect improvements in the
next few weeks.
Our flight-line fence is looking a bit run down. Any suggestions?
All flyers must have a paid membership, and paid MAAC membership.
I'm sorry, but those without a valid 2011 MAAC membership will not be allowed
to fly.
If you want to get your membership activated right away, call MAAC on the phone
and arrange it
with credit card, or go to a local hobby store and pay your membership there
(Pinnacle Hoby, which is not too far from the field, can do this).
The weather looks like it will be nice on the weekend of May 7 and 8, and I
would expect several pilots out having fun.
So far, the training sessions have been cancelled due to bad weather, but if any
beginners show up, there will likely be
an experienced pilot or instructor who can help. I hope to be there Saturday
mid-afternoon, and Sunday early afternoon.
Here's a photo (below) taken by Greg Cadez of my 81" wingspan CL415
Waterbomber on
its successful maiden flight at TEMAC on April 24.

Maiden flight of the Fly-Fly Mirage Jet
Mike Hazelton: "The weather turned out way better than forecast for today.
The winds were light but variable,
and the sun even managed to pop out for a bit. There were a few other members
out at the field
(FYI stay off the grass with your cars).
I only brought my Stryker and my Formosa out as I was being a little cautious
(no sense in loading up the car if you don't get to fly) with the conditions.
Flew both planes a number of times and the Stryker didn't show a hint of rust on
it as it went
back to it's usual routine of loops, dives, and speed passes.
Man did it feel good to fly outside! Hopefully this is the first of many
fantastic days at the field.

Dec. 28, 2010
A last minute plan for a 3-hour indoor funfly turned into one of the most
successful such events
held in recent memory in the GTA. After last years 'tween X-mas and New
Year's TEMAC indoor funfly
at the Metro Golf Dome, another such event was announced just a few days prior
to Dec. 27.
Well, we had 46 registered pilots, more than 100 models, and sometimes as many
as 20 models
flying in the air at a time. Models ranged from micro scale to jumbo scale,
docile to extreme 3D,
ARF's to scratch-built gems, helis and experimental models. Thanks to Flying
Stuff Hobbies from
Ajax for donating a model helicopter for a raffle, which was won by Paul Penna
from Ottawa.
.Thanks to everyone who participated.

A big thank-you to Clair Murray for his amazing dedication in providing flight
instruction
(and all kinds of help and advice) to TEMAC members.
